Today at Animal Control

December 28, 2009

Danielle had seen a little Scruffer Terrier mix at animal control whose time was up today and when I got there to pick him up, there were 3 pit bull mixes that had been left behind when their family moved off and left them.  The fawn female had obviously been used for multiple breedings.  I suppose they made all the money they thought they could off of her and then just tossed her aside like the Christmas wrapping that they also probably left behind when they took off over the weekend.  The other two pit mixes didn't seem as dejected as she did.  She was very sad and her face will haunt me for a long time.

The saddest dog in the entire facility was a solid white female pit.  Her face was so swollen that it was impossible for me or the animal control officer to check her teeth.  She appeared to be a young dog and she appeared to have been used for fighting.  MAYBE she had been run over by a car but I really think a fight was the more likely cause.  Her face was swollen so much that her eyes were barely slits.  Her neck...

Where do all these puppies come from?

December 27, 2009

Some people are amazed and overwhelmed by the number of puppies that CPR places in a year's time.  We are constantly asked, "Where do they all come from?"  The majority of them come from a family's personal female dog that has been left unaltered.  They contact us for help with placing the puppies and we in turn place the puppies and have the mother dog spayed.  We ask the family for donations to assist with spaying the mother dog, but tif they are financially unable, we provide the financial assistance.  The second greatest source of puppies comes from people who have had a mother dog dumped on them.  This usually happens just before the mother dog has her puppies or she is dumped about the time they are 5-6 weeks old WITH her puppies.  It's such a sad statement on the level of commitment and care that people in rural West Tennessee have to their companion pets.  If a mother dog dumped along with her puppies is an adoptable dog, we pay for whatever medical expenses she might need to get her healthy and ready for adoption.

We also get puppies from people who call us with a few puppies...
